Why Does the Church Year Begin With Advent?

Why does the Church year begin with Advent?

The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ and each of her members are indeed parts of His Body. Each year the Church recalls those sacred events leading to and resulting from the Incarnation – that moment when the Word became flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We become distracted and dissipated in our daily lives, and that is one reason why Holy Mother Church begins the Church Year with Advent as a way of reminding us of the story of the coming of our Savior during the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Why is His coming so important? Oh, that’s right. We are fallen and in dire need of a Savior. Is this just a quick fix God thought of on the spur of the moment? No, not even close. He had been planning this since we lost grace in the garden of Eden. So, is He coming in indisputable power so there will be no chance of missing Him? Hardly. He comes as a helpless, impoverished Baby. If we want to welcome Him we must become like Him. And so we start at the very beginning: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became Flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
