Preparing for Death

By: Sister Jeannine Marie, O.C.D.

To the modern mind, the practice of preparing for death that Saints, monks, and religious through the history of the Church have followed, seems, well, morbid! Here are some practical tips that may just change your mind.

  • Stephen Covey in his popular book, Seven Habits, tells us to “keep the end in mind.” He says, “Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.”
  • What is our ultimate end if not eternal life with God? Is that not an end worth working for?
  • Ask yourself, “What are my priorities?” Do you spend as much time on reaching life with God as you do your other pursuits?
  • Take a few minutes every week to think about why you do what you do.  Is God in the picture?
  • When you bring God along for the trip in your decision making you will always be assured of a “directed” purpose.

This practice really does help us to keep things in perspective. The greatest things are worth thinking about, no?

One of my favorite Scripture passages is John 3, where Jesus performs His first miracle at a wedding, providing an overabundance of good wine for the celebration!
