One of my favorite Scripture passages is John 3, where Jesus performs His first miracle at a wedding, providing an overabundance of good wine for the celebration! The wedding feast at Cana gives us a striking image of the transforming power of God in our lives. I love that when Jesus performed His first miracle, He didn’t bring the wine out of nothing; he asks the servants to be part of the miracle. He could have done it alone, waved His hand over the empty jars and filled them with wine. He could have, and that wouldn’t have been much less miraculous, in a way. But we glimpse His nature when we see that He chose to invite the servants to be part of the miracle. Jesus asked the servants to fill the jars with water. And they fill them to the brim. He asked them for a contribution and transformed it into rich, good wine.
The servants had no idea what Jesus was capable of, and in the midst of the troubles they were facing at the wedding, I wonder if it seemed a total waste of time to be filling those large jars with water when there were more urgent and pressing needs at hand! Why would they spend their precious time doing this seemingly trivial and unimportant thing? But they filled the jars to the brim. This is such an important detail. They may not have understood, but they must have intuited that this was no ordinary man, and that he had something planned they couldn’t foresee.
What is it in your life right now that the Lord is asking you to bring to Him? It might seem like a very little offering – a little more time spent in prayer, a little bit of service for the good of others, a little practice of virtue. It’s the plain, ordinary water of our everyday lives.
We know that Jesus is no ordinary man, and we know very well that He is capable of transforming our little offerings into something we could never do on our own. So what is He is asking of you today? Whatever it is, let’s give it to the last drop. It’s in these ordinary, daily details where the Lord desires to bring about the most dramatic transformation in our lives.
He really is in the details. The truth is that He could do it without us – but He so wants to bring you in, to be part of what He is about. So let’s not miss the opportunity; He is asking us to bring Him water. So let’s fill the jar to the brim, and let Him work.
