Novena to the Sacred Heart

On June 11, 2026, the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

In preparation, the Bishops invite the faithful to pray a Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with daily themes drawn from the Litany of the Sacred Heart and resources to explore the riches of Our Lord’s Heart.

As sisters, we join our bishops in prayer, and invite you to pray with us as we reflect on the themes brought to us by our bishops, and prepare for the consecration of our nation to the loving, open Heart of our Savior.

If you sign up to receive our novena resources, we will email you a daily reminder to pray along with our bishops, as well as exclusive content from the sisters to go deeper in our preparation for the consecration.

Daily Reflections

Day 1 | Heart of Jesus, Aflame with Love for Us

When our Lord revealed His Heart to St. Margaret Mary, she saw His heart crowned with flames. This fire of love, visible burning in His heart, is a visible expression of the burning love He has for each one of us. By the fire of Love that burns His heart, also set our hearts on fire with great Love for God and a zeal to serve Him and make His love knowing in the world.

Praying with our Bishops:

Lord, I come to Your tender Heart today, to You who have words that set my heart ablaze, to You who pour out compassion on the little ones and the poor, on those who suffer, and on all human miseries. I desire to know You more, to contemplate You in the Gospel, to be with You and learn from You and from the charity with which You allowed Yourself to be touched by all forms of poverty. You showed us the Father’s love by loving us without measure with Your divine and human Heart. Grant all Your children the grace of encountering You. Change, shape, and transform our plans, so that we seek only You in every circumstance: in prayer, in work, in encounters, and in our daily routine. From this encounter, send us out on mission, a mission of compassion for the world in which You are the source from which all consolation flows. Amen.

Day 2 | Heart of Jesus, Source of Justice and Love

“We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). The Heart of Jesus is the source of justice and love, the root and wellspring of love. We receive His love, and we are transformed by this love, and respond by showing love for others. Today as we continue our novena, we implore the Lord to allow us to receive and radiate His love to others.

Praying with our Bishops:

Lord Jesus, You gave your life for us. Your Sacred Heart is ablaze with love. Your hand extends towards me, and towards all, offering love, mercy, and healing. Sacred Heart of Jesus may your love transform me. Burn away my hesitation that I may become your love and radiate your mercy. Amen.

Day 3 | Heart of Jesus, Worthy of All Praise

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the living heart of Christ, revealed as an image to draw us to adore the person of Jesus. That same Jesus is present, body, blood, soul and divinity in the Blessed Sacrament. It is in coming close to the Eucharist that we also encounter to the Sacred Heart, drawing close to Jesus Himself. Before the Blessed Sacrament, we worship and adore our Lord, and find in Him the fulfillment of all desire.

Praying with our Bishops:

O most Sacred, most loving Heart of Jesus, Thou art concealed in the Holy Eucharist, and Thou beatest for us still… I worship Thee then with all my best love and awe, with my fervent affection, with my most subdued, most resolved will. O my God, when Thou dost condescend to suffer me to receive Thee, to eat and drink Thee, and Thou for a while takest up Thy abode within me, O make my heart beat with Thy Heart” (Saint John Henry Newman, Meditations and Devotions, London, 1912, Part III [XVI], par. 3, pp. 573-574).

Day 4 | Heart of Jesus, Patient and Full of Mercy

The Heart of God FOR YOU is patient and full of Mercy. Sometimes we hear the truths of our faith, but do we believe it for ourselves? Do we allow it to sink down into our own hearts? Jesus is patient and full of mercy, and that includes you, even when you’re struggling. God never gives up on us. He waits patiently for us with an inexhaustible compassion! And He has an immense gift to give us – the gift of Himself, His Love and Mercy. As we continue our novena, let us ask for the grace to receive this truth in our own heart with great trust. “Jesus, I trust in You!”

Praying with our Bishops:

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen (St. Faustina, Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, 950).

Day 5 | Heart of Jesus, Fountain of Life and Holiness

Today, the bishops point us to a beautiful prayer by Servant of God Fr. Jules Chevalier, founder of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He reminds us that we have been “chosen to be Missionaries of [His] loving Heart.” His Sacred Heart is a fountain that overflows with life lived to the full, the wellspring of holiness to which we are all called. As we pray together, let us entrust ourselves to Him with renewed fervor. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in you!

Praying with our Bishops:

Lord Jesus, Saviour of the world and source of holiness, look with kindness on all whom you have chosen to be Missionaries of your loving Heart. Ask your heavenly Father to keep us in your love, and sanctify us in the truth so that you may be glorified in us and we may reflect your goodness. Ask your Father to keep us from evil that we may always be united in bonds of love. As you are one with your Father, so may we be one with each other in your divine Heart, whose sentiments shall forever be ours and to which we consecrate ourselves in time and for eternity. Amen. (Servant of God Fr. Jules Chevalier)

Day 6 | Heart of Jesus, Atonement for our Sins

The Litany of the Sacred Heart praises Jesus with these words: Heart of Jesus, Atonement for our Sins! St. Therese of Lisieux proclaimed, “In the evening of life I shall appear before you with empty hands, for I am not asking you, Lord, to count my works.” Jesus has done for us what we could never have done for ourselves. We respond to this gift with an outpouring of love, and a desire never to offend Him. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your love!

Praying with our Bishops:

My Jesus, I love You with my whole heart. I am sorry for having so many times offended Your infinite goodness. With the help of Your grace, I purpose never to offend You again. And now, unworthy though I am, I consecrate myself to You without reserve. I renounce and give entirely to You my will, my affection, my desires, and all that I possess. (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

Day 7 | Heart of Jesus, Source of All Consolation

Jesus is the source of all consolation. He draws us to Himself through the circumstances of each day, through the people in our life, through beauty, goodness and truth. These gifts come from his Heart out of love for us, seeking us out in our suffering. As we grow in our attentiveness to these gifts, cultivating hearts of gratitude in the midst of trial, we discover that He is stewing our path with innumerable gifts of His love. Sacred Heart of Jesus, thank you for your love!

Praying with our Bishops:

I believe, O Lord, but strengthen my faith…
Heart of Jesus, I love Thee; but increase my love.
Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee; but give greater vigor to my confidence.
Heart of Jesus, I give my heart to Thee; but so enclose it in Thee that it may never be separated from Thee.
Heart of Jesus, I am all Thine; but take care of my promise so that I may be able to put it in practice even unto the complete sacrifice of my life. Amen. (Blessed Miguel Pro, SJ)

Day 8 | Heart of Jesus, Gentle and Humble of Heart

Today our prayer comes from St. Therese, who discovered in the Heart of Jesus the treasure of humility. Jesus, the King of Heaven, worthy of all praise and adoration, humbles Himself to meet us in our weakest places. He does not despise us in our weakness and poverty, but we find there the same lesson St. Paul himself learned: “but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ I will rather, therefore, most gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto thine!

Praying with our Bishops:

O Jesus! When You were a Pilgrim on earth, You said: “Learn of Me for I am gentle and humble of heart and you will find rest for your souls.” O Mighty Monarch of Heaven, my soul finds rest in seeing You, clothed in the form and nature of a slave, humbling Yourself to wash the feet of Your apostles… I beg You, my Divine Jesus, to send me a humiliation whenever I try to set myself above others. I know that You humble the proud soul but to the one who humbles one’s self. You give an eternity of glory… To obtain this grace of Your infinite mercy I will very often repeat: “O Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours!” (St. Therese of Lisieux)

Day 9 | Heart of Jesus, Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today, we join the Church throughout the United States and our bishops in the consecration prayer of our country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Even if your parish is not including this prayer in the liturgy, you are invited to unite your prayer with the Church in this beautiful occasion.

Praying with our Bishops:
Today, we consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Parishes and individuals around the country are encouraged to join the U.S. Catholic bishops in this historic occasion, beginning with this Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus written for the consecration.

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus: You know the longings of our hearts, and you desire that we enjoy friendship with you. From your pierced side, you have poured out the wellspring of life, for which we thirst. Your heart burns with a love for all people to return to a right relationship with you. We celebrate the abundant gifts you have given this nation, founded on the self-evident truths that our Creator has endowed all people with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We make reparation for the offenses against you and against human dignity that have taken place in this nation. May our hearts be united to yours, so that our families and communities enjoy peace and happiness; may broken relationships be reconciled, injustices repaired, and the wounds of our land be healed. May your holy Catholic Church serve as a sign, pointing all people to your infinite love. O Desire of Nations and Center of History, we ask you to bless these United States of America. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!
