Novena to the Sacred Heart

“The dynamic at the root of the Carmelite quest is a longing for God deep in the heart. The Carmelite journey is a pilgrimage to the heart of God whom we eventually discover has been dwelling deep within our own hearts all the time.”
–excerpt from Sacred Heart by Johan Bergström-Allen, T.O.C.

Join us daily in praying the Sacred Heart Novena!

The Novena to the Sacred Heart

To be prayed daily 9 days before the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart.
(June 18 – 26)

Lord Jesus Christ, today we renew the dedication of our family to Your Sacred Heart. We remember Your love for us. We pledge our love in return, placing You at the center of our hearts and our family life. We wish to live our lives in union with You and share in Your mission of love to all. Lord, accept this dedication and keep us always in your Sacred Heart.

(Here make your petition.)

V. Heart of Jesus, king and center of all hearts, inspire many young hearts to consecrate themselves to you for the service of the Church in the priesthood and religious life.
R. Lord, hear our prayer.

V. Heart of Jesus, glowing furnace of charity, draw us closer to Yourself and to each other through the Sacrament of the Most Holy Eucharist.
R. Lord, hear our prayer.

V. Heart of Jesus, hope of those who die in You, grant to all our deceased family and friends, and the forgotten souls in Purgatory the joy of eternal life.
R. Lord, hear our prayer.

V. Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart,
R. Make our hearts like unto Thine.

Daily Reflections

Novena Day 1

Sometimes that which is deepest in our hearts cannot be expressed in words but shown through signs, gestures, and symbols. One example is the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In a vision to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitation nun, Jesus explained that He wants His Sacred Heart to be a sign, an expression, a representation of His Divine Love in a way that would be understood by everyone.

Choose an image of the Sacred Heart that you like. Have it near you as you pray this novena, contemplating its deeply symbolic meaning. For what words can adequately describe His Love?

Heart of Jesus, fountain of life and holiness, have mercy on us!

Novena Day 2

Jesus: Do you ever think deeply about love? Its power? Its depth? Its gentleness and its strength? Its wounds? The word “love” is tossed about too easily. I want to lead you during these nine days into a profound understanding of what love is, of what My Love is for YOU. I suffered for you. I died for you. I love you. I have written your name in the palm of my hand. I ask you to think about this prayerfully and then tell me whatever you want.

Here make your petition.

Heart of Jesus, salvation of all who trust in you, have mercy on us!

Novena Day 3

Jesus: Beauty touches the soul. Beauty nourishes, uplifts, and fulfills us at a spiritual level. I want to reveal to you the secrets of my Love, a supernatural Love beyond all others. The heart, the symbol of each person’s deepest core, is the symbol of love. I have chosen my Sacred Heart to express my Divine Love, to tell you about it so that you may enter in and find rest for your souls.

Contemplate the picture of Me that shows my Sacred Heart. As you gaze upon the image, remember that My loving gaze is always upon you. Always.

Heart of Jesus, from whose fullness we have all received, have mercy on us!

Novena Day 4

Jesus: As you think about the wounds that have pierced you, you can find healing in my Sacred Heart. Do you see where the centurion’s sword pierced my Heart? That is what every sin, no matter how small, does. My Sacred Heart is a pierced Heart. The thorns that encircle my Sacred Heart also express this. Every time you are hurt and wounded, I know your sorrow and I understand. Come rest in My Sacred Heart.

Here make your petition.

Heart of Jesus, worthy of all praise, have mercy on us.

Novena Day 5

Jesus: Do you see? My Heart is not hidden. It is exposed, unprotected, vulnerable. Through this image, one of the things I am revealing is my great longing for intimacy with you, a union at the deepest level of your being. This is why I created you, that my Love will unite us. Yes, an intimate union in My Divine Love.

Behold my Heart which has so loved you that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to reveal My love; but in return, I receive from so many only ingratitude by their irreverence and sacrilege, and by the coldness and contempt they have for Me in this Sacrament of Love.” (Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary)

Heart of Jesus, our life and resurrection, pray for us!

Novena Day 6

Jesus: See how my heart is exposed and vulnerable. See how my hand points toward my Heart, a gesture that says “Look, let this image express what is inexpressible in human words – how much I yearn for your love and how I long to lavish my love upon you.

The famous painting of Me standing at the door of your heart reveals another aspect of my love. The door is closed and the only handle is on the interior which only you can open from the inside. It is a choice. It is a decision. One only you can make. Remember Me. Remember that I stand at the door of your heart, waiting.

Here make your petition.

Heart of Jesus, patient and full of mercy, have mercy on us!

Novena Day 7

Jesus: The flames that arise from my Sacred Heart depict another facet of my Divine Love. One night, I spoke to Saint Margaret Mary in the depths of her heart and said, “Put your head on My Heart.”

Later, she wrote: “He asked me for my heart, and I asked Him to freely take it, and He did. He reached out, He took my heart, and He pulled it within His own chest. And I saw my heart as a little atom in a burning furnace and then He pulled out again and my heart was aflame….”

Here make your petition.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, burning furnace of charity, have mercy on us.

Novena Day 8

Jesus: In gazing upon the image of my Sacred Heart, you will learn more about the human heart, that muscle about the size of a fist, that takes in old, tired blood then re-circulates it as clean, rejuvenated blood. The human heart does this about 100,000 times a day.

The human heart also refers to the human spirit, the core, the focal point of all living and loving. Contemplating this aspect of My Heart also gives you a pattern of understanding the mysteries of your heart – its capacity and its purpose.

Here make your petition.

Heart of Jesus, desire of the everlasting hills, have mercy on us!

Novena Day 9

Jesus: Here are the 12 Promises I have made to all those who have devotion to My Most Sacred Heart and share it with others.

I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
I will establish peace in their homes.
I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
Tepid souls shall become fervent.
Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.
I will bless those places wherein the image of my Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.
I will give to priests the power of touching the most hardened hearts.
Those who propagate this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart, never to be effaced.
The all-powerful love of my Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; my Heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour.

Prayer: Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we, who glory in the Heart of your beloved Son and recall the wonders of His love for us, may be made worthy to receive an overflowing measure of grace from that fount of heavenly gifts. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, God, for ever and ever.
