Layers of Sound, Listening for His Heartbeat

By Sister Mary Scholastica, O.C.D.

Stop and stand still. Close your eyes and listen. What do you hear? Do you hear the layers of sound filling in the space all around you? The honking of car horns, running water, birds chirping in the background, a dog barking far away, a plane flying overhead, a door closing, soft voices giggling.

Your present moment consists of more than you realize. Do you hear the layers of sound?

We can look at this from so many different angles. For our purposes today, let us simply touch upon the fact that stopping, standing still and carefully listening allowed you to tune into many layers you were not originally attentive to. This kind of intentional listening brings to the forefront how intentionality and “tuning in” allows you to see and hear things you wouldn’t normally hear, to add color and context to the environment around you.

Do the same with Jesus. Place yourself in His presence. Stop. Stand or sit still. Listen. He will speak. He will reveal to you the layers of sound within your own heart. More importantly, in this stillness, you will start to hear the beating and feel the vibrations of His Heart. This kind of listening means you are experiencing the fullness of the present moment and all the depth, vibrancy and richness that comes from living a life “tuned in” to the Heart of Jesus.

God could have created a perfect world. He could have arranged things so as to prevent us from falling into the pit by our sinful, despicable actions. He’s all powerful, after all. This would have been so easy for God. But that’s not how He decided to do things. He decided to preserve our free will, to solicit our love and obedience, risking not receiving the honor and regard due to Him. We fall many times, we fall again and again. In fact, it could be called an eternal let-down by us, the creature, in reference to the Creator.

Merciful Like the Father

Merciful Like the Father

One of the most liberating gifts that we can receive from the Heart of our Heavenly Father and Jesus, our Savior, is the free gift of mercy. But do you sometimes find yourself struggling to receive this gift? I mean really receive, in the innermost depth of your being with unshakable certainty?

Our Merciful Mother

Our Merciful Mother

In the Anáhuac Valley of Mexico, on a barren hill called Tepeyac, Our Lady of Guadalupe came as a “merciful Mother,” a healer and restorer of all who are broken in body and in spirit. It is an amazing thought to consider that the “woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars” would place her feet upon the bloodstained soil of a nation’s festering woundedness.
