The Fruit of the Spirit is Joy

By Sister Jeannine Marie, O.C.D

Family spirit. How to define it? Comradery, shared vision, trust, and assurance you are loved? It is likely that there are as many definitions as there are families. Families, as is the case with their individual members, are unrepeatable and unique. The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls the family, “the domestic church.” Each family is a microcosm of the Church. It reflects the creative nature of the Father, the love of the Son, and the power and joy of the Holy Spirit. If there is true communion in the family, it will be expressed in the Spirit’s gift of joy.

The Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles are a family, as well. There is a structure of authority reflective of the father, a nurturing and supportive element reflective of the mother and there is growth and maturing reflective of the children. Our family is unique as well. This family is not a choice or construct of our own making but purely an expression of the love of God. We too must learn to trust, be vulnerable, share sorrows and joys, contribute, grow and mature, and yes, make mistakes and start over again. But that is what makes it all so worth the effort. The rewards are out of this world!

How would I describe the family spirit of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart? Spirit-filled joy. When one truly invests 100% to the stability and growth of one’s family, the Spirit is set free in joy. So, take time in your family to give as well as receive…to be open and caring…to step out and trust that you are loved and appreciated. Go the extra mile to sow peace and you will reap the fruit of the Spirit – joy!

God could have created a perfect world. He could have arranged things so as to prevent us from falling into the pit by our sinful, despicable actions. He’s all powerful, after all. This would have been so easy for God. But that’s not how He decided to do things. He decided to preserve our free will, to solicit our love and obedience, risking not receiving the honor and regard due to Him. We fall many times, we fall again and again. In fact, it could be called an eternal let-down by us, the creature, in reference to the Creator.

Merciful Like the Father

One of the most liberating gifts that we can receive from the Heart of our Heavenly Father and Jesus, our Savior, is the free gift of mercy. But do you sometimes find yourself struggling to receive this gift? I mean really receive, in the innermost depth of your being with unshakable certainty?

Our Merciful Mother

Our Merciful Mother

In the Anáhuac Valley of Mexico, on a barren hill called Tepeyac, Our Lady of Guadalupe came as a “merciful Mother,” a healer and restorer of all who are broken in body and in spirit. It is an amazing thought to consider that the “woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars” would place her feet upon the bloodstained soil of a nation’s festering woundedness.
